My 2014 Oscar Predictions!
IT'S OSCAR DAY, EVERYONE! YAAAAAAAY!
I LOVE the Oscars. Each year, I try to watch all of the best picture flicks so that I can make decisions based on who should win, and not who I want to win.
Because, let's face it, if I was the academy, I'd just give Dame Judi and Philomena ALL of the awards right now, and then sit down with her and have a good cry. Because Philomena was BRILLIANT, you guys. Seriously, WATCH THIS MOVIE.
Okay, so I'm not going to cover ALL of the categories, because that would be boring and take forever.
But here are the important ones:
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Her. Hands down. This was a wonderfully unique film. The story itself blew me away. This film was like nothing I've ever seen before, and for that, it should win.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
12 Years A Slave.
Gravity. Nothing else even comes close to Gravity in this category.
The acting roles aren't going to be informed decisions for me. I didn't watch all of their flicks.
However, I'm still going to make predictions, because I'm crazy like that!
Jennifer Lawrence. I would love to see Lupita win it, but JLaw had much more screen time, which makes her role more memorable. (Sorry, Lupita!)
THIS is where s**t gets difficult. When I reviewed Moneyball way back, I mentioned that Jonah Hill always plays the same role. Yeah, I need to apologize to Jonah. He KILLED it in Wolf of Wall Street. He was NOT the bumbling but sweet sidekick he usually plays. He was intense and killer and just really, really fantastic in this movie. So I'd love to see him grab this award.
I think Jared Leto's got this one, hands down. He was so perfect in Dallas Buyers Club, and that role tugs at the heartstrings. Academy members love that stuff.
Okay, not really. :(
It's going to be Amy Adams, because this was an incredibly different role for her to play, and she totally killed it.
But my heart wants Dame Judi to sneak in under the radar and snatch it from her. ;)
O. M. G.
I have NO idea on this one. At all!
Okay, Leo might get the sympathy vote. The Oscars have snubbed him so many times, the academy might see this as their only chance to finally award him for everything good he's ever done...which is pretty much every movie he's ever been in.
Matthew McConaughey was effing AMAZING. See, here's the thing about Matt--I was NOT a fan of his. I thought him shallow and weird and he just wasn't my type of actor. And then I watched True Detective. And THEN I watched Dallas Buyers Club. WHAT WAS I THINKING?! McConaughey is...my God, he's absolutely stunning. My eyes are riveted to the screen whenever he's on it. So he could absolutely grab this award tonight.
Bruce Dern, you guys. Bruce Dern might completely sneak in under the table and take this one away. He was so, so amazing in Nebraska.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, you guys. CHIWETEL. FREAKING. EJIOFOR. remember him in Serenity? Yeah....He's got this one in the bag. Another Whedon alum will be grabbing that Oscar tonight. He's my choice. He was...There are no words for how fabulous he was in 12 Years A Slave. He was perfection.
THIS IS SO HARD, YOU GUYS.
I'm going to go with Steve McQueen for 12 Years A Slave, but Scorsese could win because he's freakin' Scorsese.
Again, my heart says Philomena.
Y'know, very few of the films made me cry this year--
Captain Phillips (OMG DAT END SCENE WITH TOM HANKS I SOBBED YOU GUYS), 12 Years A Slave, and Philomena. Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska made me tear up a bit, but no actual crying. I just can't give the Oscar to a movie that didn't at least make me tear up!
So my choice is 12 Years A Slave. Everything about it was brilliant. Everything.
And there are my 2014 Oscar predictions!
